December 2012

2012 has been a very busy year for Girlguiding Benton Division. All members celebrated the Queens Diamond jubilee with a party. In the morning each section made a variety of crafts including crowns and badges and then after lunch we played party games and held a disco.
We were extremely lucky to have a visit from not one but 2 olmpic torch bearers who told the girls about their experiences on running with the torches before letting the girls have their photo taken.

Rainbows
During 2012 Rainbows have had lots of fun cooking,making crafts and singing. In April Rainbows from across the divison held a Wizard of Oz theme day where they made wands and decorated biscuits. One of the best things about being a rainbow is going on trips and there have been plenty this year to places such as the centre of Life, Round the Twist soft play and Adventurelands.
One rainbow group were lucky enough to hold a sleepover. the theme was around the world and they loved making passports, eating pizza and making crafts from around the world.
There have been lots of theme evenings including spanish night, egyptian and even a snowman night.

Brownies
Brownies have had lots of fun this year in their units and as a Division.In units Brownies have completed lots of badges such as Sweetastic, cooks and entertainers.They have had visits to South Shields, Cullercoats and visitors such as the police have came into the unit to talk to the Brownies about crime prevention. There have been lots of pack holidays to Moorhouse in Durham and Kirknewton.Sports day for all Brownies in the Divison took on an Olympis theme with an opening ceremony,torch relay and team games. The overall winners were 75th Newcastle Brownies -well done!

Guides
Guides is still very popular and they have had lots of fun this year camping, visiting Leeds and York and going to the Big Gig tp see some of their favourite pop bands. A coach full of Guides visited Edinburgh Zoo in September to see the Pandas and another unit is due to visit soon.
In units Guides have been working on Go For its and badges.Guides celebrated the jubilee with street parties in their units and a cream tea for familes and friends. All Guide units ended the term by visiting the beach for some games and a visit to the chip shop.

Rangers
Rangers love cooking and have managed to bake cakes in a cardboard oven and make pancakes for shrove Tuesday.Trips out for the rangers have been to Climb Newcastle, geocaching and a back stage tour of the Theatre Royal.

Young leaders
We have lots of young leaders across the Division who have been helping out in their own units throughout the year and are hoping to go out for a meal together in the next few months.

Adults
Adults are not forgotten and have attending first aid and section trainings throughout the year. On a social side leaders have attended a Meal at the stonebrook and held and pizza and cake get together night. Next year we hope that many of our leaders will go away for a weekend of training and fun at waddow.

New unit
In september a new Guide unit was opened in Forest Hall. It has proved to be very successful and has 23 Guides with a waiitng list of girls all interested to join in the fun.

2 Senior Section members from Benton Division were presented with their Chief Guide's Challenge awards. The award is gained by completing the first 2 sections of each octant and is part of the Senior Section programme. Well done to Kat and Alex.

1st Westmoor Guides and Brownies celebrated their 50th Birthday with a party at Olave Lodge. The Brownies had a party with songs and food and the Guides went outdoors for a campfire singalong with marshmallows and hot dogs! Well done to both units, hopefully you will continue for another 50 years.

A Brownie Guider and a Brownie from 1st Westmoor Brownies have been to Downing Street today to deliver a petition on behalf of the Changing the World project, Plan UK, that they had been working on in the unit for the past few months. Well done to them! Plan UK's "Being A Girl" project ivolved the participants taking photographs of what it meant to them to be a girl and then hosting an exhibition in order to raise awareness of the plight of many girls in developing countries who do not have the same opportunities and privilages as themselves.

4th Killingworth Brownies and Guides celebrated their 50th Birthday with a party at St Johns Church Hall. They held an afternoon long event on Saturday with visits from old Brownies and Guides, songs from the Water Aid Changing the World project and a disco. Well done 4th Killingworth!

Congratulations to Katrina from 1st Killingworth Guides and Kat from 1st Westmoor Guides for being appointed places on the management team for the GirlguidingUK's Centenary Camp at Harewood House next summer. Katrina is the Assistant Manager of the Senior Section team while Kat is the Assistant Webmaster.
